A Cork girl living in Galway City, Ireland with my husband and 4 young kids. I’m a certified Life Designer® Coach which I completed with Julie Reisler in the USA. I love being a life coach and all things to do with coaching, I am always reading and listening to material that I know will make me a better and more skillful coach.
I am happiest when in a deep heartfelt conversation sipping a coffee with a friend or a loved one. In my spare time, you’ll see me sitting on a beautiful Connemara beach having a picnic with my family, enduring icy sea swims, warming up in a sauna, cooking and eating really good food, listening to podcasts, and reading several self-improvement and spiritual books at once.
WHY DID I WANT TO BE A COACH?
I grew up as the youngest of seven children in a small Irish village in the 1980s. After my father left when I was nine, my mum, who had been a stay-at-home parent for 20 years, had to find several jobs to keep us together as a family and feed us. I lived in poverty; water poured into my bedroom through the ceiling for years, and I worried daily about where the money would come from to buy food. I experienced mental health issues, which I kept hidden from my mum so as not to burden her. I stopped sleeping and worried constantly. My schoolwork suffered, and I ended up in remedial classes. I had very few meaningful friendships because I was embarrassed by my circumstances, my living conditions, and the old clothes I wore. I constantly felt inadequate and experienced significant shame due to the judgment from the community for being poor and having separated parents in a time when that was considered social stigma.
At the tender age of 11, I made a conscious decision to take control of my life. It began with daydreams where I envisioned a future of ease, where I was just as good as everyone else and had everything I needed. Those daydreams soon turned into a series of actions: I started working a weekend job, buying my own clothes and shoes, and contributing to the household to ease the financial pressure. I quickly realised that my education was the key to making my dreams a reality, so I focused on my studies and went to university. I put myself through university by working as many hours as possible to pay the rent and bills,
learning to manage my time and money efficiently along the way.
Each step on that lonely road required me to be resilient and resourceful, yet I never lost touch with the kind little girl that I always was. Over time, my confidence grew, and I started to believe that I was just as deserving and capable as anyone else. I secured a top graduate job in London, and I remember feeling immensely proud that a little girl from nothing was good enough to work alongside the privileged. I obtained a professional qualification and went on to secure a series of other corporate jobs. My success extended into my personal life as well: I am now blessed with four beautiful children and a loving husband. I've also cherished my time as a stay-at-home parent, with all of its challenges, and no longer have to worry about where I'll find money to buy food. However, I often think back to that little girl and thank her for her hard work and determination. As a way to honor and respect my childhood, I regularly engage in charity work to help families experiencing similar hardships.
This story is the reason why I want to help and support others. I have gained numerous life skills and mindset techniques that I am eager to share with others. I refuse to let anyone believe that they cannot improve their life, because I know that if an 11-year-old girl can do it on her own, anyone can.
